Preparation
  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. Cream butter and sugar: Beat together until fluffy.
  3. Add egg yolks, sour cream, and vanilla: Mix until combined.
  4. Stir in the dry mix: Combine until the dough comes together. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Chill the dough: Cover and refrigerate for at least 45-60 minutes.
  6. Roll the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness and cut into donut shapes.
Frying
  1. Preheat oil: Heat oil in a deep fryer to 325-350°F.
  2. Fry donuts: Fry a few at a time, about 1-2 minutes per side, until deep golden brown.
  3. Drain and cool: Remove and drain on a rack or paper towel.
Glazing

  2. Dip warm donuts: Once donuts are slightly warm, dip into the glaze and allow to set.

Notes

For best results, glaze the donuts right before serving. Store leftovers loosely covered at room temperature. Homemade donuts are best enjoyed the same day.
