Ingredients
  

Burger Ingredients
  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 or 85/15) Choose a blend with some fat for juiciness.
  • 4 pieces Soft burger buns Potato buns are recommended for a fluffy feel.
  • 4 slices American cheese Important for melting.
  • 4 leaves Iceberg lettuce For crunchy freshness.
  • 1 large Tomato Sliced.
  • 1 cup Pickle slices To layer in.
  • 1 medium White onion Can be used raw or grilled.
  • 2 tbsp Butter For toasting the buns.
Sauce Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise Base for the sauce.
  • 3 tbsp Ketchup For sweetness.
  • 2 tbsp Sweet pickle relish Adds a tangy flavor.
  • 1 tsp White vinegar For acidity.
  • 1 tsp Sugar Balances flavor.
  • to taste Salt and black pepper For seasoning.

Method
 

Prepare the Sauce
  1. Mix together mayo, ketchup, sweet relish, vinegar, sugar, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Taste and adjust if necessary. Chill while cooking.
Prepare the Toppings
  1. Slice lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions. Set aside for assembly.
Form and Cook Patties
  1. Divide beef into 2 to 4 ounce portions. Roll lightly and then press into thin rounds.
  2. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
  3. Butter the cut sides of the buns and toast them until golden, then set them aside.
  4. Season one side of each patty with salt and pepper, then cook the patties in the hot skillet for about 2 minutes.
  5. Flip the patties, add a slice of cheese, and cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. If desired, grill onions until soft and browned, or slice them raw.
Assemble the Burgers
  1. Layer the burgers with the bottom bun, sauce, lettuce, tomato, patty with cheese, onions, and pickles, finishing with more sauce and the top bun.

Notes

For a lighter option, replace the bun with lettuce wraps. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
