Ingredients
  

For the cocktail
  • 2 ounces vodka, preferably smooth and clean
  • 1.5 ounces coffee liqueur
  • 1 ounce heavy cream or half-and-half can be scaled to 1.5 ounces
  • 1 ounce berry syrup made from berries, sugar, and water
  • 1/4 cup mixed berries for garnish and mash
  • Ice cubes Use fresh ice to maintain flavor
  • Optional: tiny pinch of vanilla extract or a few drops of almond extract
  • Optional garnish: chocolate shavings, cocoa powder dust, lemon twist, or a skewered berry
  • Optional sugar rim: dip the rim in a little syrup, then roll in fine sugar
For the berry syrup
  • 1/2 cup berries
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Combine 1/2 cup berries with 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons water in a small saucepan.
  2. Simmer for 5 minutes, mash lightly, then strain to create berry syrup.
  3. Chill your glass with ice water while you prepare the drink.
  4. Pour vodka and coffee liqueur over fresh ice in the chilled glass.
  5. Gently float heavy cream on top.
  6. Drizzle in the berry syrup and let the colors swirl together.
  7. Give it a few lazy stirs right before you sip.

Notes

If desired, muddle a few raspberries in the glass before adding the ingredients for a deeper fruit note. Serve with a dessert like a slice of strawberry swirl cake for a perfect pairing.
