Ingredients
  

For the Custard
  • 2 cups whole milk For a richer flavor.
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar Adjust if you prefer less sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch For thickening the custard.
  • 4 large egg yolks Adds richness to the custard.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Use real vanilla for best flavor.
  • 1 pinch salt Enhances the vanilla flavor.
For the Pastry
  • 1 sheet puff pastry Use store-bought for convenience.
For Topping
  • powdered sugar To dust on top.
  • fresh berries Strawberries or raspberries work well.
  • whipped cream Optional, for serving.

Method
 

Prepare the Custard
  1. In a saucepan, whisk together whole milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt over medium heat.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and gradually add a little of the hot mixture to temper them.
  3. Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan and continue to cook, whisking constantly until thickened.
  4. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract, and let cool.
Prepare the Pastry
  1. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface.
  2. Place half of the pastry in a baking dish and bake according to package instructions until golden.
Assemble the Squares
  1. Once the custard is cool, pour it over the baked pastry.
  2. Top with the second half of the puff pastry and chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  3. When ready to serve, slice into squares using a hot, clean knife.

Notes

These squares can be topped with powdered sugar, fresh berries, or whipped cream for extra flavor. They last well in the fridge for about 3-4 days.
