Ingredients
  

Meat Filling
  • 1 lb ground pork May substitute with beef or venison
  • 1 lb ground beef Add more mashed potatoes if all beef is used
  • 1 large onion, diced Adds flavor to the meat
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Enhances the taste of the filling
  • 1 medium potato, boiled and mashed Helps bind the filling
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon Optional spice that adds warmth
  • 1/4 tsp clove Optional for flavor depth
Pie Crust
  • 1 package pie pastry Use butter for flavor or store-bought for ease
  • 1 large egg, for wash Gives a shiny finish

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large pan, brown the ground pork and beef over medium heat.
  2. Season with salt, pepper, cinnamon, and clove as desired.
  3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic once the meat is no longer pink, and cook until the onions are soft.
  4. Boil, mash, and stir in the potato to bind the filling together.
Assembly
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Fit the pie pastry into a 9-inch pie plate, fill with the meat mixture, and cover with another layer of pastry.
  3. Crimp the edges and make several slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  4. Brush the top with egg wash.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 60 minutes.
  2. Let cool for 15-20 minutes before serving to avoid leaky pies.

Notes

Tourtire can be made ahead of time and tastes better the following day. Freeze for up to two months. Leftovers are great with eggs for breakfast!
