Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled or unpeeled Yukon Gold is preferred for creamy consistency.
  • 1/2 cup butter Use a generous amount for flavor.
  • 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream Warm before mixing.
  • 1/2 cup sour cream Optional, for tang and softness.
  • 1 tablespoon salt Salt the water for boiling potatoes.
  • to taste black pepper Add to taste.
Optional Flavorings
  • 2 cloves garlic, roasted or simmered with the milk Optional for added flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Peel and cut the potatoes into evenly sized chunks.
  2. Put them in a pot, cover with cold water, and add salt. Bring to a boil and simmer until fork tender.
  3. Drain well, then return to the hot pot for 1 minute to dry out.
  4. Warm the butter and milk or cream in a small pan but do not boil.
Mashing
  1. Mash the potatoes by hand until mostly smooth.
  2. Gradually add warm butter and milk or cream until reaching desired consistency.
  3. Stir in sour cream if using and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

Notes

For keeping mashed potatoes warm, use a slow cooker, double boiler, or oven methods to avoid drying out. If storing leftovers, reheat gently and consider converting them into mashed potato pancakes for a tasty treat.
