Ingredients
  

Cabbage and Meat Mixture
  • 1 head cabbage, chopped Savoy cabbage is recommended for extra tenderness.
  • 1 lb ground beef Can be substituted with ground turkey or chicken.
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup cooked rice Slightly undercooked rice works better.
  • to taste salt Cabbage acts as a flavor sponge, so season generously.
  • to taste pepper
Topping
  • 1 cup shredded cheese Optional, but recommended for a bubbly top.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Chop the cabbage into rough chunks.
  3. In a skillet, brown the ground beef with diced onions and minced garlic.
  4. Combine the browned meat with diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, cooked rice, salt, and pepper.
Layering
  1. In a large casserole dish, layer shredded cabbage followed by the meat mixture, and then a layer of tomato sauce.
Baking
  1. Top with shredded cheese.
  2. Cover the dish with foil and bake for approximately 45 minutes or until the edges are bubbly and brown.
  3. Serve hot with crusty bread or a salad.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a dash of smoked paprika. This dish can be prepared ahead by assembling and refrigerating it before baking. It freezes well if unbaked.
