Ingredients
  

Hush Puppies Ingredients
  • 1 cup Cornmeal (yellow) Classic choice.
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Baking powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Sugar A pinch.
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 cup Buttermilk Or regular milk with vinegar.
  • 1 cup Sweet corn kernels Fresh, frozen, or canned and drained.
  • 1/4 cup Finely chopped onion Optional.
  • 2 cups Oil for frying Peanut, canola, or vegetable oil.
Honey Butter Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Softened butter Mixed with honey.
  • 1/4 cup Honey
  • 1/8 tsp Salt A pinch.
  • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon Optional, for a cozy vibe.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  4. Fold in the sweet corn and onions if using.
  5. Let the batter rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
Frying the Hush Puppies
  1. Heat 2 inches of oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
  2. When the oil is hot enough, drop spoonfuls of batter into the oil.
  3. Fry until golden brown, flipping once for even cooking.
  4. Remove from oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  5. Salt lightly while hot.
Making Honey Butter
  1. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, honey, salt, and cinnamon until combined.
Serving
  1. Serve hush puppies warm with honey butter.

Notes

For the best results, make sure the oil is hot before frying. You can also try different variations by adding jalapenos, green onions, or spices to the batter.
