Ingredients
  

For the sausage and gravy
  • 1 lb breakfast sausage Use either mild or hot sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Sprinkle over cooked sausage to make gravy
  • 2 cups whole milk Whole milk gives a richer gravy
  • to taste salt For seasoning the gravy
  • to taste black pepper Add generous amounts for seasoning
  • a pinch garlic powder Optional, for added flavor
For the biscuits
  • 8 oz refrigerated biscuits Can also use homemade or frozen biscuits
For optional toppings
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese Add on top for a cheesy finish, if desired

Method
 

Prepare the sausage and gravy
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and crumbled.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage, stirring for about 1 minute.
  3. Slowly add milk while stirring continuously until the gravy thickens.
  4. Season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to taste.
Prepare the casserole
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cut the refrigerated biscuits into quarters and spread them evenly in a greased 9x13 baking dish.
  3. Pour the hot sausage gravy over the biscuit pieces.
  4. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes, or until the biscuits are puffed and golden, and the center is set.
Serving
  1. Let the casserole sit for 5 to 10 minutes before serving to allow the gravy to set.

Notes

This casserole can be made ahead by preparing the sausage and gravy the night before. Store the gravy in the refrigerator and assemble in the morning before baking. Ensure not to soak the biscuits overnight to maintain their texture.
