Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey) Choose ground turkey for a lighter option.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped Adds sweetness to the filling.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Enhances flavor.
  • 3/4 cup sloppy joe sauce Can use store-bought or homemade.
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup Optional, for a sweeter vibe.
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard Optional, for tang.
  • Salt and pepper To taste.
For the Sandwiches
  • 8 slices bread Texas toast, sourdough, brioche, or regular white bread work well.
  • 2 to 3 cups shredded cheese Cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix are great choices.
  • Butter or mayo For spreading on the bread.

Method

Preparation of Sloppy Joe Filling
  1. Brown the beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks.
  2. When mostly done, add the onion and cook until soft, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds, then stir in sloppy joe sauce.
  4. Add ketchup and mustard if desired, and simmer for a few minutes until thick.
Assembling and Cooking the Sandwiches
  1. Lay out the bread and put cheese on the bottom slice, then spoon on a layer of sloppy joe meat, followed by more cheese, and top with another slice of bread.
  2. Spread butter or mayo on the outside of the bread.
  3. Toast in a skillet over medium-low heat for 3 to 5 minutes per side, pressing gently until golden and the cheese is melted.
  4. Let it sit for 1 minute before slicing to help keep the filling inside.

Notes

Store filling in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for 2 months. Use thick bread to prevent sogginess. Shred cheese fresh for better melting. Avoid overstuffing the sandwiches.
