Ingredients

For the Cupcakes
  • 1 cup All purpose flour Measure gently to avoid excess.
  • 1 tbsp Unsweetened cocoa powder Just a bit for that classic red velvet hint.
  • 1 tsp Baking soda Helps the cupcakes rise.
  • 1/2 tsp Salt Balances the sweetness.
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar Sweetens the cupcakes.
  • 1/2 cup Neutral oil or softened butter Oil gives extra moisture.
  • 2 large Eggs Room temperature is best.
  • 1 cup Buttermilk The tang and tenderness hero.
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract Adds flavor.
  • 1 tbsp Red food coloring Use gel or liquid.
  • 1 tsp Vinegar Helps achieve the signature taste.
For the Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 8 oz Cream cheese Use block style, not tub.
  • 1/2 cup Butter Softened.
  • 4 cups Powdered sugar Add gradually to avoid clumps.
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract For additional flavor.
  • 1 pinch Salt Balances sweetness.

Method

Cupcake Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. In a bowl, mix the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: sugar, oil or butter, eggs, buttermilk, vanilla, food coloring, and vinegar.
  4. Combine the wet and dry mixtures until just mixed. Do not overmix.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
  6. Bake for 18-20 minutes, checking at 17 minutes. A toothpick should come out with a few moist crumbs.
  7. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
Frosting Process
  1. In a bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt while mixing until creamy.
  3. If the frosting becomes soft, chill in the fridge for 15-20 minutes before using.
  4. Frost the cooled cupcakes as desired.

Notes

For serving suggestions, consider adding a pinch of red velvet crumbs on top, a chocolate drizzle, or fresh berries. Store frosted cupcakes in the fridge if warm.
