  • pinch brown sugar Optional, for a hint of sweetness.
  • to taste chopped parsley Optional, for garnish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Peel the onion and trim the root end slightly so it sits flat, but keep it mostly intact.
  3. Cut a deep cross on top of the onion to allow butter to seep inside.
  4. Place the onion in the center of a foil sheet.
  5. Top the onion with butter, then sprinkle with garlic, seasoning, a pinch of salt, and pepper.
  6. Wrap the onion tightly in the foil to create a pouch.
Cooking
  1. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, checking for tenderness with a knife. Larger onions may take closer to 70 minutes.
  2. Carefully open the foil (beware of hot steam) and spoon the buttery juices over the onion before serving.
  3. For added flavor, open the foil for the last 5 minutes for a roasted effect.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer for the best flavor. You can also chop leftover onion to add instant flavor to eggs, pasta, or rice.
