Ingredients

For the Sandwich
  • 4 slices Bread (white or brioche) Thicker slices work best.
  • 4 slices Cheese (Swiss, provolone, or Gruyere) Use two slices per sandwich.
  • 4 slices Ham (or turkey) Deli slices work great.
For the Egg Dip
  • 2 large Eggs For dipping.
  • 1 splash Milk or half and half Makes the dip creamy.
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 1 pinch Pepper
For Cooking and Serving
  • 2 tbsp Butter or oil For frying.
  • 1 tbsp Powdered sugar Optional, for serving.
  • to taste Jam (raspberry or strawberry) For dipping.

Method

Preparation
  1. Build the sandwiches by laying out your bread, adding cheese, then ham and/or turkey, then another slice of cheese, then topping with another slice of bread.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, a splash of milk, salt, and pepper to make the egg dip.
Cooking
  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter or a mix of butter and oil.
  2. Dip each sandwich quickly in the egg mixture, flipping to coat both sides, then place them in the hot pan.
  3. Cook until golden, about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Lower the heat if the bread browns too quickly.
Serving
  1. Let sandwiches rest for a minute to allow the cheese to settle. Dust with powdered sugar if desired, and serve with jam.

Notes

Tip: Do not overload the sandwich to prevent cheese leakage. It can also be baked at 425°F for a healthier option.
