Potato Base
  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, sliced thin Russets can also be used, but they tend to be softer.
Creamy Sauce
  • 4 tablespoons butter Melt to create the sauce.
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Used to thicken the sauce.
  • 2 cups milk Add a splash of heavy cream for richness.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream Optional, for added creaminess.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh or garlic powder can be used.
  • 1 teaspoon salt To taste.
  • 1 teaspoon pepper To taste.
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika Optional, for added flavor.
Toppings
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded You may mix in some Monterey Jack.
  • 1 cup bacon, cooked and crumbled Cook until crispy for better texture.
  • 1 cup sour cream Optional but enhances the loaded potato flavor.
  • 1/4 cup green onions or chives, chopped For garnish before serving.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a baking dish.
  2. Slice the potatoes thinly, about the thickness of a coin.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter and stir in the flour to create the base.
  4. Slowly whisk in the milk and cream, adding garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika; stir until thickened.
Layering
  1. Layer the sliced potatoes in the buttered dish, spooning sauce over and sprinkling cheese and bacon between layers.
  2. Reserve some bacon and cheese for the final topping.
Baking
  1. Cover with foil and bake for about 45 minutes.
  2. Uncover and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
Finishing Touch
  1. After removing from the oven, dollop sour cream on top, sprinkle reserved bacon and cheese, and add green onions.
  2. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Slice the potatoes evenly for consistent cooking. Resting is crucial for a cleaner cut.
