  • 1 cup long grain rice Holds up well and soaks in flavor.
  • 2 cups beef broth Can substitute with vegetable or chicken broth.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For sautéing onions.
  • 2 medium onions Caramelized for flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Optional for added flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme Optional for flavor boost.
For Serving
  • 1/2 cup grated Swiss or Gruyère cheese Optional for a cheesy topping.

Method
 

Caramelize Onions
  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over low heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and sauté for about 20-30 minutes until golden brown and jammy.
Add Flavor and Rice
  1. Deglaze the pan with a splash of beef broth or dry white wine, scraping up the browned bits.
  2. Add rice to the skillet and toast gently for 2 minutes.
Cook the Rice
  1. Add the remaining beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper, then bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes, or until rice is tender.
Serve
  1. If using cheese, sprinkle it over the rice and place under the broiler until bubbly and golden.
  2. Garnish with fresh thyme if desired and serve warm.

Notes
