Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 pieces Cuban bread or substitutes Choose Cuban bread if available; soft Italian bread or hoagie rolls can be substitutes.
  • 1 cup roast pork Sliced or pulled into bite-sized pieces, preferably seasoned.
  • 4 slices deli ham Adds saltiness and comfort.
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese For melting smoothly.
  • 4 slices dill pickles Provides crunch and acidity.
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard Essential for flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons butter Softened for brushing before pressing.

Method

Preparation
  1. Warm the roast pork slightly if it's cold, but not piping hot.
  2. Slice the bread lengthwise and spread yellow mustard generously on both sides.
  3. Layer the ingredients in the following order: ham, pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and an additional layer of Swiss if desired.
  4. Close the sandwich and gently press it down with your hands.
  5. Butter the outside of the bread to achieve a golden, crispy crust.
Cooking
  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and place the sandwich in the pan.
  2. Place a second heavy pan on top, or use a press. Cook for about 3 to 5 minutes per side until golden and the cheese is fully melted.
  3. Let the sandwich sit for one minute before slicing to help keep everything together.

Notes

Avoid overloading with pickles, and ensure the pork isn't too wet. Can be prepped ahead and pressed just before serving for optimal crunch.
