Ingredients

Main dough ingredients
  • 1 cup Warm water Warm, not hot, to not hurt the yeast.
  • 2 tbsp Granulated sugar To wake the yeast up.
  • 2.25 tsp Active dry yeast This will help make them fluffy.
  • 4 cups All purpose flour Easy and dependable.
  • 1 tbsp Salt For flavor.
  • 2 tbsp Butter A bit in the dough, most magic is on top.
Buttery topping
  • 4 tbsp Melted butter For brushing on top.
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder For flavoring the topping.
  • 1/2 tsp Salt To season the topping.
  • optional Italian seasoning For extra flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Warm your water until it feels like a warm bath, not hot. Stir in sugar, then sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit until foamy.
  2. Mix in flour and salt, then knead until the dough looks smooth and feels slightly stretchy.
  3. Let the dough rise in a lightly oiled bowl until it doubles in size, about an hour in a warm kitchen.
  4. Divide the dough into equal pieces and roll each piece into a breadstick shape.
  5. Let the shaped dough rise again briefly for extra fluffiness.
Baking
  1. Bake the breadsticks just until the tops are barely golden.
  2. Brush generously with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and salt while still warm.

Notes

Keep the breadsticks on a tray covered loosely with foil after baking to trap steam and help them stay soft. Only serve immediately for warmth.
