Preparation
- Warm your water until it feels like a warm bath, not hot. Stir in sugar, then sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit until foamy.
- Mix in flour and salt, then knead until the dough looks smooth and feels slightly stretchy.
- Let the dough rise in a lightly oiled bowl until it doubles in size, about an hour in a warm kitchen.
- Divide the dough into equal pieces and roll each piece into a breadstick shape.
- Let the shaped dough rise again briefly for extra fluffiness.
Baking
- Bake the breadsticks just until the tops are barely golden.
- Brush generously with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and salt while still warm.
Notes
Keep the breadsticks on a tray covered loosely with foil after baking to trap steam and help them stay soft. Only serve immediately for warmth.
