Preparation
- In a large bowl, add warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it looks foamy on top.
- Add flour and salt, then mix until a shaggy dough forms. If it is super sticky, add a spoonful of flour at a time. If it looks dry, add a tiny splash of water.
- Knead for about 6 to 8 minutes by hand or in a mixer until it feels smooth and stretchy.
- Put the dough back in the bowl with a little oil, cover it, and let it rise until doubled, usually about 1 hour.
- Punch it down gently, then divide into 10 to 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a rope shape.
- Place on a baking sheet, cover, and let them rise again for about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Bake at 400 degrees F for about 12 to 14 minutes, until the tops are just barely golden.
- Brush with melted butter right away, then sprinkle with garlic powder and a pinch of salt.
Notes
For the best results, use warm water, be mindful of the dough consistency, and do not skip the second rise. These breadsticks can be frozen after baking and reheated. For a cheesy variation, sprinkle cheese on top 2 minutes before the breadsticks are done baking.
