  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • a pinch Salt
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • ½ cup Melted butter
  • ½ cup Brown sugar (for the topping)
  • 1 cup Hot water or very hot coffee

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter an 8 by 8 baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, stir together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add milk, vanilla, and melted butter. Stir until the batter is combined, being careful not to overmix. The batter will be thick.
  4. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar and cocoa powder for the topping. Sprinkle it evenly over the batter.
  6. Carefully pour hot water over the topping. Do not stir.
Baking
  1. Bake for about 35 to 40 minutes, until the top looks set and crackly, and sauce bubbles around the edges.
  2. Let cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

This dessert is best served warm. Can be topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, toasted pecans, or fresh berries for added flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days.
