Preparation
  1. Toast the pecans in a dry pan or in the oven until they smell nutty, about 5 to 8 minutes. Let them cool slightly.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter, then stir in brown sugar and corn syrup or honey.
  3. Stir constantly on medium heat until the mixture looks glossy and slightly thick, about 3 to 5 minutes. It should bubble gently.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, salt, and the toasted pecans. Add the crushed cereal if desired.
  5. Spread the mixture on a parchment-lined tray and let it cool completely before breaking it into chunks.
