Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 4 slices Cooked ham slices or ham steak cut into chunks You can use leftover spiral ham, thick deli ham, or smoked sausage.
  • 2 medium Sweet potatoes Slice them hasselback style for even cooking.
  • 1/4 cup Brown sugar Maple syrup or honey can be used as alternatives.
  • 3 tablespoons Butter, softened Mix with brown sugar and spices.
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Add a pinch of salt for flavor.
  • 1 pinch Salt Adjust according to taste.
  • 1/4 cup Chopped pecans (optional) Add them for crunch at the end.
  • 1 splash Maple syrup (optional) Use for extra sweetness.
  • 1 sprinkle Smoked paprika (optional) For an added layer of flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F, or preheat a grill to medium heat.
  2. Tear off four large sheets of foil and lightly butter the center of each one.
  3. Slice the sweet potatoes hasselback style and set one on each foil sheet.
  4. Add ham right next to the sweet potato to let the juices mingle.
  5. Mix softened butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt, then spoon it over the sweet potatoes and dab a little on the ham.
  6. Seal the foil packets tightly and bake for about 35 to 50 minutes, depending on the sweet potato size. For grilling, it takes about 30 to 40 minutes, flipping halfway.
  7. Check if the sweet potato is done by testing with a fork; if it slides in easily, it's ready.

Notes

You can prepare these foil packets ahead of time and store them in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Let them sit for 15 minutes before baking to ensure even cooking. If sweet potatoes are large, consider microwaving them for a few minutes before cooking.
