Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13 pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang.
- In a bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles crumbly sand. Stir in the egg and vanilla until it holds together.
- Press about two-thirds of the dough into the lined pan evenly.
- Pre-bake the crust for about 10 minutes to prevent sogginess.
Making the filling
- In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter, then stir in brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Add flour or cornstarch and a splash of milk, stirring until thick and glossy.
- Spread the filling evenly over the warm crust.
Baking and Cooling
- Crumble the remaining dough over the filling to create a topping.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the top is lightly golden and edges are set.
- Cool completely before slicing to avoid a gooey mess.
Notes
For variations, you can add a glaze of powdered sugar and milk, mix in nuts, or try different sweeteners like maple syrup. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature, or refrigerate for up to 6 days.
