Ingredients

For the Blueberry Mixture
  • 1 to 1.5 cups Fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup Water For simmering
  • 1/3 cup Sugar or honey Adjust to taste
For the Lemonade
  • 3/4 to 1 cup Fresh lemon juice From about 4 to 6 lemons
  • Cold water Add until the desired taste is reached (about 3 to 4 cups)
  • small handful Fresh basil Plus more for serving
  • Ice For serving

Method

Making the Blueberry Mixture
  1. In a small pot, add the blueberries with 1/2 cup water and your sweetener. Bring it to a gentle simmer for about 5 minutes, just until the berries burst and the liquid turns deep purple.
  2. Take it off the heat and let it cool a bit. If you want it smooth, strain it through a fine mesh strainer. If you like a more rustic texture, leave some pulp in.
Combining Ingredients
  1. In a pitcher, add fresh lemon juice and the blueberry mixture. Pour in cold water until it tastes right to you.
  2. Clap the basil leaves between your hands to release the aroma, then drop them into the pitcher. Stir and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Taste and adjust for more basil or sweetness as needed.
Serving
  1. Serve over ice, garnishing each glass with a few blueberries and a basil sprig if desired.

Notes

For best results, use cold water and avoid over-steeping the basil as it can become peppery. You can also make this drink bubbly by replacing half the water with sparkling water right before serving.
