Ingredients

For the Margarita
  • 2 ounces tequila (blanco or reposado) Blanco is classic; reposado is warmer and smoother.
  • 1 ounce blood orange juice Fresh squeezed is best, but bottled works in a pinch.
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice Freshly squeezed for best flavor.
  • 1/2 ounce orange liqueur (like triple sec or Cointreau)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 ounce simple syrup or agave Optional; depends on sweetness of blood oranges.
  • 1 cup ice For shaking and serving.
  • Salt for the rim Optional.
  • Blood orange slice or lime wheel for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. Rim your glass (optional) by rubbing a lime wedge around the rim and then dipping it into salt on a small plate. Set the glass aside.
  2. Fill a shaker with ice. Add tequila, blood orange juice, lime juice, and orange liqueur. If desired, add a small splash of agave or simple syrup.
  3. Shake for about 15 to 20 seconds until very cold.
  4. Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a blood orange slice.
  5. Taste with a clean spoon before pouring. Adjust sweetness with more sweetener or lime juice if needed.

Notes

Feel free to customize the drink to your preference. Try different garnishes or adjust sweetness based on your blood oranges. A spicy rim can be made by mixing salt with chili powder.
